So I have bought my bonsai/mallsai around 3 weeks ago and I've had it indoors. I was considering putting it outside for summer but I live in UK and no matter what season, there always be heavy winds on particular days. I've read on some websites to protect it from winds but then others say being outside is beneficial . Any suggestion to what I should do? I want it to grow and I feel being inside it isn't really growing but outside I think it will.

Yes. Shelter it from the wind and put it outside.
Am I missing what the problem is?

So how am I meant to put it outside and have it not be affected by wind.

Shelter doesn't mean indoors. Get a small 'greenhouse' from Wilkos for ~?30



I wouldn't leave the PVC cover closed, though, to keep a bit of air flow.

Are you going to tell us what species it is? If it is a hardy species then it should never be inside, if it is a tender species then it needs protection all year, preferably a greenhouse not house.Unless you are on the top of a hill then wind is not that much of a problem.

Its a Chinese Elm and its around 10 years old.

So I have a dismantled greenhouse sitting in my shed (If need I'll put it back together) its looks like the picture attached but the material is green in colour. Will my Chinese Elm be happy in that?

That'll work, though kinda bulky. Screen works well, too. Pick up some at your local hardware, build a small frame and attach it. I live on a hill, so my trees are subject to whatever breeze comes, but I also have a windbreak of trees and bushes, that lessens the gust. If it becomes gale force, which happens sometimes, then I set them on the ground until it's over. When the leaves are off the forest, my bonsai are in the winter bed, which has windscreen as described above.

Main issue with wind is knocking your trees over &/or drying them out (producing die back). Some of my trees need water every day, so while I'm out there, I give a general misting to all. No wind-related issues.

Google 'bonsai garden' & you'll find very few with full windscreens. Some have walls, like a courtyard. Some have a windbreak of trees (like I have). Some have greenhouses. It's whatever you wallet allows.

Kinda changing the topic here but I want to put the Chinese Elm outside for summer and this May month (in a greenhouse so its protected from winds). But I'm confused about this dormancy thing I want to bring the bonsai inside for winter. Apparently if it goes through dormancy then it'll have to be placed outside for ever.

If this is the case how do I avoid dormancy?
Am I right to put it outside for summer and to bring it in winter?
Do Chinese elms requires a dormancy period?
I'd like to keep it as a indoor bonsai but I'm putting it outside for a bit so it can grow and then I can take it back inside.
