I have to re-do my shari and jin every year, they turn a bit green after a while.
First I clean them up with a toothbrush, I may use my dremel, if necessary, to make some improvements.
I'll finally use the brush again, leave the cleaned area a bit wet, then apply jin seal with a small paint brush - straight from the bottle.
Not a recent picture, that big root at the bottom of the shari has meanwhile been removed:

One reason I don't really like to post pictures is because somehow I cannot get that right - it never looks as good as in reality.
You are not wrong though. This was the tree after I thinned it out for the first time, a year ago now. It now has been wired almost completely and I'm trying to form the foliage pads. It will be repotted next spring, then hopefully it will produce the growth that I need to further shape it. It should be presentable end of next year. I hope
