Hi, I am considering getting into bonsai more specifically citrus bonsai. I know there is a lot of variables but, in general, how long would it take a citrus bonsai i.e. a lemon bonsai to produce fruits? Also, do citrus bonsai require more attention than others and how much would that be. Many Thanks, Thomas.

For me, I would only try this if you live in a mediteranean or subtropical climate. In my region, citus are poor most of the year. They need the hot climate.

I do have a Kumquat bonsai.
Full of oranges.
But I live in a tropical country.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I live in Scotland so was planning to grow my Lemon bonsai indoors. Is this possible? I know most bonsais are grown outside with some exceptions but what of lemons and citrus? Thanks, Thomas.

To grow bonsai, your trees must be in the best possible condition. You will not reach that condition indoors.As said, you need them in their natural environment, which is mediteranean or subtropical.

Last I knew, Schotland has deep frosts in winter? Citrus will not survive that.

In Birmingham, Alabama, most of the year it is hot but part of the year, maybe three months, my citruses (citri?) have had to come in. One lasted three years, three lasted two years, and I am not trying again.

There were ants, spider mites, scale, and other problems, but basically I could not duplicate a tropical environment. You might be able to construct an environment with proper humidity, temperature, light, etc. It would take some research. Good luck.
