Hello! I recently picked up a Darkstar ceanothus, and I’d really like to turn it into a bonsai. I wouldn’t say it’s quite pencil thick and I think it’s in a prime shape to be molded into a bonsai, but I’m not sure of how the watering schedule for an Evergreen plant works or when the best season to do it would be.I’m thinking it would be good to try and pot it and do it initial shaping this spring because I feel like it’ll be too big next year. Can I follow basic bonsai technique to turn this into a bonsai? Is it too young to put into a bonsai pot and shape it? Should I wait to prune it?

If you want a pencil thick bpnsai the next 10 years or so you can put it into a bonsai pot and start training it as a bonsai.

If you want it to grow thicker trunk, uppot into the biggest pot you have space for or even plant it in the ground to thicken the trunk. Once your prefered trunk size is achieved, start to reduce the roots until it fits into your prefered pot.

Many thanks. I used a bigger pot. Hope that it will be better.
