Dear 每日吃瓜,
My name is Chris Roberts and I was just gifted a 每日吃瓜 Tree growing kit from the Jonsteen Company from my sister and brother-in-law last night. I started to do some research on the tree and ran across your site.I haven't started the process of growing it yet, because I had a question for you about it. Does it matter when I start the process of growing the tree? Can I start it now, or should I wait until next Spring to start it?

Sincerely,

Chris Roberts

Great that you have found this site!

First, let me explain that bonsai is grown from normal trees. There are no such thing as bonsai seeds, they are just normal seeds. While it is possible to grow your own bonsai from seed. You are having a period of 5-20 years in front of you just growing out a starter material. That is why most of us let the nurceries take care of developing starter materials and buy mature trees to train into bonsai.

On your question. Yes it makes a difference when you start a maple seed. It is a temperate tree that do everything according to season. They bud out in spring, turn color in summer, produce seeds in late summer and drop them together with leafs in authum. The seeds is in the ground all winter until the conditions in spring is just perfect for germination and a full season of growing strong before they drop their leafs just as their parents. Timing is important for them to successfully survive their first winter dormancy.

after all trees around you have shed their leafs. Sow your seed outdoors and wait for the magic to happen in spring. Depending on where you are it may make sence to protect them first winter. But after that the best you can do is to plant them in the ground and let the trees grow strong for the next 5-10 years.

Meanwhile, buy some mature trees so you can start to practicing the art of bonsai.

good luck!

After doing some research on this breed of tree and seeing that I live in an apartment, I'm going to have to look for something more suited for my enviroment. I can't plant a tree outside where I live and the maple is not recommended as an indoor plant. I have to look at either a ficus or a jade for myself. Where would be a good place to get one of them from? There are no nurseries near me that specialized in bonsai trees.

There are no such thing as bonsai species. They all are just normal trees that you train to become bonsai.

If we are true to the meaning of bonsai. Jades cannot be bonsai. Most people do not care and call them bonsai anyway. I grow them to look like bonsai myself but prefere not to call them bonsai, but looks like a bonsai instead.

You do not need a nurcery that is specialized in? bonsai to find good starter materials. Just go to any nurcery around you and pick a tree that you find have potential.
