Is it dying?

I'm a newbie and may have killed my first tree before having a chance to identify it. It was a gift only a month ago, but my sons didn't know from the shop what kind it was. I thought I'd water it like my other plants until I had a chance to figure it out. It started with good looking leaves with some newer growth (lighter green). Now the leaves are curling up and dry. Can it be saved? I can try to find an earlier photo when it looked healthy if that would help identify the species.

I can't tell from the picture what species it is but depending on what country you are in if the temps are above freezing it should be outside You need to water properly remove the dead dry leaves and hope.

Hard to be certain but this looks like it is past the point of no return.
The only thing you can do is to keep the soil moderately moist, certainly NOT very wet (Rather drier than wetter). Wait.
Do not repot
Do not fertilize
Do not scratch the bark
Do not trim
If in 2-4 weeks you see no changes and the branches do not return from their wrinkled appearence, I would not give you a lot of chances of getting any growth back.
I also cannot identify it with certainty from the pictures. Do you have pictures from when it was healthy?

Alas, it doesn't look good for my tree. Leaves are still dry and curled, still on the branches. As this was a gift, I would like to replace it with the same species (once I am satisfied that I know how to care for it). Does anyone recognize the last two photos I posted?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Maybe better to ask this on a forum for common houseplants - as this isn't a bonsai, really.
