Hi everyone! I desperately need help. I want to take care of an abandoned bonsai here at home, but I don’t know where to start. I’m starting with almost 0 knowledge, hence my username rookiebonsai. I’ve put pictures for you to see the problem. Should I cut off the sprawling branches? Must I repot it?

That is overgrown indeed- but not a species I'm familiar with, so little help from me there except that there is nothing you need to do " now. Has been in its pot a long time, looks healthy so no emergency

Hey Rookie,
Welcome to the empire!

Your ficus is overgrown to the point that it will need a complete restyling to be a reasonable bonsai again. But before you do that, I would recommend trying to get it back to optimal health again. In which climate are you, how is this kept?

It looks like it might have some insect or mite living on it (Hard to tell but the leaves look off). And it seems the plant is in a very small pot with mainly rocks?
