Hello everyone. Please could someone offer an appraisal and some advice about my first bonsai?

I was given this bonsai some time within the last 5 years, and I did very little with it. About 6 months ago I trimmed the roots, replaced the soil, changed the pot, and trimmed some of the dead branches.

I have achieved some new growth, but I am unsure if I need to do anything else for now. I want to give it some time to recover, but wondered if there was anything that might be recommended to do in the future.

Has that long top grown since prunning and repotting 6 months ago? Are you in the northern hemisphere?

Looks like a chinese elm to me. So should be outside.

I live in a flat so...no chance of that, I did think I would have to water it a little more so it thinks it's outside.

Oh that's a nice one, I had a Chinese Elm once, they're pretty easy to take care of, it can take a lot of sunlight, and it doesn't take a lot of wattering to keep it healthy, however, on the winter it will loose it's leaves, so you should put it on a shadier place, and reduce a little the wattering, since it's "sleepy" it can rot it's roots...
I would put it on a bigger pot just to build some branches, but if you just changed it, I would wait... I think the best time to make big changes on them, it's by spring...

Unfortunatelly, I had to travel once, travel took more than expected, days we're hot and it died.. I miss that one.

It is the temperature that makes winter, not water. You might succeed in making it survive a few years. But it will need more than survival to make it a bonsai. Eventually it will die. If it is a chinese elm that is, small screen, old eyes and blurry picture. So I am not totally sure.
