Hello all. I hope to get some advice, very new to growing anything to be honest. Back in June of 2020 I got a kit of Bonzai trees. They were planted in the cardboard pots that came with the kit for a few months then transplanted to normal clay pots. The pots became very moldy on the outside from the water and after a few months they were moved into the plastic pots they are in now. They sit on a window in my house and get some direct sunlight during the day.

They grew fairly fast but the last 4 months they see to have stalled and not grown at all. The royal one has had branches with many leave but they fall off after a while. At first I was watering them when the soil got dry. So then I thought I was under watering them. So then I watered them each day till water cam out the bottom. After a while doing that I thought I was over watering them and now I water them till the water comes out the bottom every other day or two.

So, I have no idea what is wrong they just don't see to be growing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is that they are inside, it’s as simple as that. There is no such thing as an indoor tree.
If temps are not sub zero in your part of the world place them outside, and leave them there.

PS: you do know that there will grow normal trees out of these “ bonsai seeds”?

Thank you very much. I did have them outside before winter came. Its been in the 20F in this area lately and I was worried that was too cold. It is getting warmer I guess I just need to put them outside.

P.S. Yes, I understand they are full tree seeds :-).

Look at the trees around you: do they migrate inside when it becomes colder?
I asked because the most important thing to know when growing bonsai is horticulture. Without a healthy plant you can’t do anything bonsai-ish . In your case: you have at least 5-10 years before you can do anything bonsai-ish so you have sometime to study horticulture:)

Norway spruce grows all over my country and can take -35c without problem. Below 0c for 4-6 months. What they are really fussy about is lack of the much needed dormancy. Bringing them from -7 to room temperature is really stressful to them. Your first misstake and the biggest was to sow in the wrong season. They didnt get a full growing season before winter. So you are in catch22. They will proboably not make sub zero temperature outside and inside they will die from lack of much needed dormancy. Your best chanse is to put them outside as soon as you have temperature over freezing and leave them there.
