Help with rescue tree was created by GreenArmadillo

My colleague had gotten this little bonsai for her teenage son, who unsurprisingly got bored with it pretty quickly, and it wasn't doing really well so they wanted to get rid of it. So I adopted it and of course I'm just starting to learn how to take care of it properly, so I would appreciate some advice.

I know it needs to go outside as soon as possible, but when I got it, it had only lived indoors and we were in the middle of a ridiculous cold spell (-35 C with -49 C wind chill). The tree wasn't looking very well so I put it in my brightest room by the window for the last week or so and it's doing much better now and will go outside within the next few days as it's starting to warm up quite a bit.

Here are some of my questions

1. The foliage is pretty dense, but I think not all of it will recover. Especially the main right branch unfortunately still looks pretty dead and is dry and brittle (although some more central shoots look like they might make it) while most of the others have gotten some color back. Would it be healthier for the tree to remove the dead branches and shoots and clear some of the very dense areas or just leave it be and recover for a while longer first?

2. The tree is starting to produce some shoots. As it's still recovering, would it be better to leave those be or should I shorten some of them to get healthier growth in some areas?

3. The ends of the new shoots are very fine and leafy (see picture). Is this pretty normal or does it hint at some deficiency in nutrition etc? Would fertilizer be appropriate (and when) or again just leave it be for the moment?

So I guess basically my questions boil down to: what can I do to help the tree but without stressing it out even more and making it healthier rather than killing it completely?

I appreciate the help, thank you!

Hello and welcome.
It’s a juniper and they die inside ( as most trees do), simple as that. On the pictures I can’t really see new shoots, only a dead tree, but if you say there is new green then there might be a 0,01 chance that it will survive. Place it in the coldest room you have, remove the pebbles, give it a good watering untill water spills from the drainage hole underneath, and outside in a sunny spot asap. DO NOT fertilise, cut off branches, fiddle with it.
Good luck with it, but I think chances are very very poor that it will survive.

So based on your questions:

1: dont remove anything. Dead needles will fall by itself.

2: I cant see new growth. If there is, dont cut an unhealthy tree, just leave them to grow.

3: weak new growth is a sign of inbalance between light and temperature. An effect of indoor keeping. Never fertilize an unhealthy tree.

I think lucr is right about it is to late for this tree.

Update:

It is now a year later and good news, my little tree friend has survived!
As you can see the entire right side is dead, but the left is strong and healthy and has even survived a harsh winter.

So, questions once again, at this point what should I do or can I do for its good health? Thank you!
