Hi,

I have been looking after my port Jackson fig for just shy of a year now. Currently sat on a sunny balcony based in Sydney so has received good light and temp over the last few months. I’m currently pretty happy with the height of my bonsai although just questioning what to do next.

1. Unsure on how to reduce leaf size
2. Proper way to stop the height
3. Trunk Growth

If any tips could be recommended I would be highly grateful! Thanks in advance

1. That's the last thing you'll think of, just have in mind that there is no magic, so for big leafed trees (if so) you aim for big bonsai. But I'm confused about it's size on the picture tbh, it's the first time I see this kind of Ficus...

2. Maybe you'll think again about this because of question n?. 3... The proper way (imo) would be prune it's apex and let it ramify.

3. In order to a trunk or branches to thicken, you have to let it grow, more leaves it has, bigger is it's demands for sap, in order to flow all that sap it needs to thicken. So to create a tapper on it, people usually let it grow freely, chop it back, let it grow for a while, than chop again and so on, that leaves it with some scars that will eventually close, but it takes a bit of time... Another way is using the branches to thicken the trunk, like, you let a lower branch grows unprunned, that will thicken the trunk bellow that branch, and so on...

Thank you for your response! The tree is currently sat under 30cm from the soil.

In regards to pruning would I cut the leaf at the stem? As I done this to a smaller branch and the whole branch died and fell off!

I would let it grow freely for a Few years still. In order to get into proportions it needd to be both higher and thicker. The only way to achieve that is growth.

I agree with the comment above, growth is what you need the most.
