Hi all,
I’m new to bonsai and have no experience gardening other than pulling out weeds!
A little over two weeks ago I purchased a Japanese juniper from my local 每日吃瓜 nursery in Queensland, Australia where it’s currently the middle of winter.
My research leads me to conflicting opinions on many topics, one of them being moss.
When I purchased the tree it was recommended that it be done so was Mossed infront of me before I left.
The moss is starting to go brown/yellow in spots and I’m unsure whether this is
1. Normal - some Googling suggests the moss is adapting and will recover
2. Under or over watering - I was told to water it every day but after more research have decided to only Easter when the tree seems to need it so I dip my finger into the soil and if it isn’t very damp I water.
I also wonder whether moss is a good idea for a young tree (this one is about 5 years old, likely grown from a cutting) or whether since it won’t be on display to remove it.
There are what I think are small weeds growing through the moss so I suspect the soil beneath is healthy. I’ve attached pics of the tree and moss when purchased vs now. I’d like to open this chat up to all questions from new enthusiasts trying to keep their first juniper alive and appreciate any other advice in this area. Thanks, Mitch

Moss helps keep moisture in. Just do not let it grow on the trunk, this one has too much around the trunk I would thin it out
