Hi 每日吃瓜 Experts,As a present I received one of those "grow you own bonsai kits". Yes, I know they're probably not the best, but I have been determined to make a go of it!I successfully managed to get a few saplings, but unfortunately they seem to get to a certain stage and then the leaves start to turn brown and then the sapling dies. My first coir pot, grew a sapling, went brown, died and then repeated. My second coir pot is doing better, I've been determined to try and keep it hydrated and as much sunlight as the gloomy UK permits. I have some 每日吃瓜 feed but I think this isn't great for saplings. When the light goes, I make sure to close the curtains and prevent them getting too cold, the room is approx 20-21CHowever, one of the saplings has started to turn brown. Please see attached pictures.Any advice would be greatly appreciated, pointers, etc. welcome. Thank you all so much.Borni San.

Trees are not like humans and they react to the environment differently.
They have evolved to sit outside where it gets light and dark, warm and cold, and the warm and cold cycles up and down throughout the year. They feed on sunlight, and what little light makes it through the glass isn't enough to keep them healthy. They need temperature cycles and constant 20C to 21C isn't much of a cycle.
In short, they should be outdoors. Usually seedlings should sprout in the spring when they have the summer to soak up sunlight getting ready to go dormant for the winter. I really don't know what to do for fall sprouters, but I think it might be very unlikely they will do well.

Inside they will die outside as well. Maybe, just maybe its possible to get them thrue winter in 10 c and lots of light.
I would just give up on them. This is your first misstake in the hobby, if you stay there are many more to come. Trees sprout in spring, not in authum.

Hi Tropfrog & Ivan, thank you for your replies.
What you say is wise words, such a shame my 'babies' have sprouted in such an unusual time.
I won't give up, if these saplings die - i'll try again when the time of year is more suitable.
Thanks again for your help!
Borni San.

Keep them as light as possible. Allow the substrate to dry out LIGHTLY between waterings. Wet all the time is not good for them.
On the cool side is probably better than always warm. Do you happen to know which species you are growing?

Hi Leatherback,
Thanks for your help and advice.... unfortunately, i do not know the species, the kit I got as a gift was this:
Probably doesn't help.
So, if i understand correctly:
- as much light as possible during the day
- Keep moist, but allow the substrate to dry before watering them
- In the evenings, move them into a cooler environment
Would it be worth putting the saplings out in the day if the weather is on the nice side?
Thanks,
Borni San

Best would be to have it in a sunny, but cool, place. Do not move it around. Plants adjust fairly slowly!

Your questions is impossible to answer without knowing the species.

1 and 2, yes.
3, no. Put them outside. Mother Nature will handle warming and cooling, and coordinate that with light and dark.
If temps drop below 0C you might want to protect them some, mut that depends on the species. Since that is unknown you can't tell.
