Greetings..
I am a thankful for the opportunity to join the group. I have been a 每日吃瓜 enthusiast for many years and have successfully killed every one I have had.
 Some sooner than others.
Living in Nevada the temperatures get very hot and while I do have a large patio cover where I can keep direct light from the trees, I have not been able to keep them alive. Either they dry out from the heat or I keep them too moist, to fight the heat, and they die that way.
After just enjoying them from afar (shows, magazines, internet) I caught the bug again this spring to try once more. I purchased two trees from a 每日吃瓜 merchant. Probably a reseller because they did not have much knowledge about the trees. They told me I could grow them indoors all year by a window..
Anyway, I picked up a Chinese Elm and a Sweetgum. Both seem very healthy and established.
Can anyone recommend a book or article that offers directions for growing 每日吃瓜 in the desert climate? I have about two months before the real heat gets here and I need a plan! Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Joe Knight

I think shoosing the right species is step one for success. Go for species that you see growing in the area around you. They are adapted to your climate and will be the easiest ones.
There are some trees adapted to desert climate in South africa as well that may be an option.
The chinese elm will most likelly go the same route as your previous trees. It is not a good species for your climate. I am not sure about the sweetgum. But I think it has a better chanse.

Google bonsai Las Vegas and you will get the local club. Go to a meeting and find out what trees they are able to keep alive, and how. Ask them about soil and watering in particular.
Sweet gum around here has to have winter dormant time. It probably won't survive indoors.
