Four year old maples from seed...what next? was created by bungalowbill

Collected seeds from japanese garden in local park.sowed them four years ago.i now have three healthy trees in pots.leaves have been trimmed.no other work other than feeding,watering,sheltering. What next...? Currently in 1litre pots.

I would separate the trees into separate pots. Now is too late, but next spring just before budbreak. While having the trees out of the soil, I would cut tap root.

The one in individual pot I would just grow on.

Stay with your care and uppot every 3 years or so until you have the desired size of the trunk. While uppotting work on the upper roots for a nice flair.

Meanwhile take inspiration from pictures and videos online and create your vision for the final result.

Thanks for the advice...what soil should i use when up potting? Currently in an ericaceous compost with grit added for drainage?

That will work for uppotting as well. Expensive bonsai soil is for trees in late development phase in shallow pots. Using it in this early phase is just a waste in my opinion.
