New Maple 每日吃瓜 - LEAF SCORCH! was created by janjanjan

Hi all,

I just received a Japanese Maple in the post, about 8 years, Osakazuki variety. It shipped from Spain to Italy. Arrived okay in the package, soil seemed nice and moist, so I let it be for one day and gave it a normal watering the following day. Wired down a couple branches, nothing very violent, just a minor tweak before they harden as they were nice and flexible. Decided not to repot for now, as I didn’t want to shock it for the summer.

Next morning, I touch the soil. Still feels damp so I do not water. Hot and sunny day follows. Maple is under the sun for the full afternoon.

The morning after I go check and it is completely dry and wilted. I am shocked at how fast this happened. I soaked it in water for a little bit, misted it, relocated to a spot in the shade for most of the day, and branches lifted up but leaves remain crisp.

It is mid-June. I just received this tree literally three days ago. What does this mean? Was he severely dehydrated from the traveling through the post?and all?and I underestimated this? Or was he living in a greenhouse and my new sunny location suddenly shocked and scorched him?

What do I do now? Tree branches seem?healthy, summer is technically yet to begin. Do I let it be, crispy leaves and all, or do I remove them? I ordered a maple fertilizer, some forums tell me that after scorching if I remove damaged leaves and fertilize, I should be able do get a new flush of foliage and save the tree.

What do you guys say?

Remove leaves, fertilize, water properly and hope for new leaves? Or leave the leaves on and let it be?

Thanks for the help!

Put it in the shade and make sure it is well watered at all times. Do not fertilize until you see signs of new growth.

Thanks for the advice.

What should I do with the schorched leaves? Cut them off or leave them on until they’re ready to go on their own?

I do not think it makes any difference for the tree.

If the leaves are dead then you can remove them, the tree got dry and dropped its leaves, its called survival

I just watched this video yesterday and it very much relates to your topic. In the video he cuts off all the leaves.

The leaves are dead so there is no point in leaving them on the tree.
