Hi 每日吃瓜 Community-
I am seeking to advice/help with my new 每日吃瓜 endeavor. I am brand new to the art, and starting small. My wife bought me the golden gate ficus pictured below from a local nursery. It came (somewhat) wired and potted in the shallow bonsai pot, and it seems to be holding up well thus far. There are even a few roots coming up and starting to show.
Is this the case, or will just allowing it to grow and maintain it in the pot it is currently in?
In the event of a repotting in order to develop a thicker trunk, I wouldn’t do so until next spring (as I think is the guidance on that aspect).?I’ve also had the pictured small dwarf jade from a nursery in a VERY small pot for a year or two, and recently repotted it into something much bigger in hope that it will grow and take off. Again, I’m hoping to cultivate thicker trunks in both of these, and I know it takes time. Any advice is welcome and much appreciated!

However, my first goal is to thicken the trunk for a year or two, as it looks pretty slim now. While I would hate to disrupt anything and mess with the nice look of the pot, I am wondering if it needs something bigger in which it can grow freely and develop that thicker trunk. Please log in or register to see it.

The pot this plant is in is big enough, so no do not re pot. There is no reason to do so. The wire is doing nothing for the plant and I would take it off. The thickness of the trunk to the the branches is not bad, and is not the primary consideration. You need to learn how to look after it before doing anything major to it. As for the Crassula, it is only a succulent and will take years to grow to that huge pot. Neither plant can be called bonsai for some years yet.

I very much appreciate the thoughtful reply. I certainly know better than to consider either of them anything close to bonsai yet—I’m just trying to get a grasp on the earliest stages of what I know is a very long process and making sure the two plants are healthy from the start. I’m glad to hear that you thought that wire should be removed, as that was my instinct as well. I couldn’t really figure out why it was even on there in the first place. I assumed to sell it and make it seem like something more to people walking around the nursery. I’ll cut it off and just let the tree grow. As for the jade plant, my plan was just that— give it a long time to grow into that much bigger container and see what happens.?
Again, thanks for the reply to a newcomer.?

The jade is in a huge pot! It is important to understsnd thst jades is from the desert. It is important for them to dry up between waterings. Pretty much oposite to bonsai. In that big pot, it will take quite some time to dry ut. Water heavily with a very long interval and it may be fine.

I was actually a bit worried about it being too big, but was trying to use hat was on hand at ho,e. Do you think it’s work repotting again into something smaller?
Also, thanks for the thoughtful reply and advice!

My intention was to highlight the difference between trees and succulents and their care. Not to make any suggestion about repotting. We do not have enough information for such a sugestion.
