Trimming plants you can do at any time of the year, for pretty much any species. Some species will bleed a lot if trimmed at suboptimal times, but regular triming will not kill any tree. At the moment you have a plant that is sulking, and overgrown, so some action is needed.

You need to differentiate between (sub)tropicals and non-tropicals. Tropicals grow year-round. As in winter sun intensity is lower, you wil get less growth then in mid-summer. But they will still be active. (But even here growth comes in waves). So.. There is not really a specific growing season for tropicals, to which the chinese pepper belongs. Waiting till you get new growth means that the plant has stabilized from the trimming.

Repotting is best done at the start of summer, as the plant recovers more quickly at that time. That being said.. you have trouble now. So I would not wait till summer. But find someone locally who can help you. Trimming roots is easy. Making the plant live afterwards is not.

Leatherback - thankyou so much for the advice. So my plan is:

1) Find a local 每日吃瓜 expert / group who can help me in London
2) With them, trim the branches that are too long as soon as I can
3) Wait for the plant to recover, until around March/April
4) Then repot around April to take advantage of the warmer weather/more sun, and trim the roots too.

Thanks again Leatherback! I'm very grateful for you having taken the time to help me here.
