since it's still winter, you might consider to lift it out of the pot to check the roots.. trees like this are often potbound and in dire need to a repotting..
on the other hand it would be smart to do such a thing together with an experienced person.. preferably at a bonsai club.. (or maybe the nursery who sold it to you would be kind enough to assist you;.

Posted 9 years 3 months ago #19692I'm off to my first club meeting on Monday so hopefully I can get some help there.
It does need work as the guy told me, he knocked 40 pounds off the original asking price so I got it at a very good price.
The retailer told me he doesn't water at all when they are dormant and to feed once a week and water daily in growth?
He has many many 20yr old maple material trees and a nice selection of show pieces...
I was also tempted by a much more established elm of similar size and some beech he had all at a similar price...
It was loose and Un wired in the pot as it was loaned to a party at the Chelsea flower show last year and wasn't fully repotted, they needed to remove one of the main balancing branches from the rear so that's the main area I'm looking to work on, in the picture that is the rear as I want the front facing my window.
I've since had it out and done some very light root trimming, I then added a thin layer of soil to the Base, wired it down and filled with bonsai soil and covered with moss I collected.
I have all intentions of having it out again Monday to check my work and probably do a better root trim and re soil with some professional help!-)

Very good.

I guess he knows what he's doing, and I have not watered my trees in months - as there was no need. Our climate is wet, and as it's cold, there is very little evaporation. However, I wouldn't let them dry out completely, whether they are dormant onr not.
and to feed once a week and water daily in growth?
Watering, yes, but feeding... depends what you're fertilizing with.

I think it is better to do one thing at the time. You shouldn't have done the 'very light' root trimming, if you plant to do more trimming shortly after that.
