:( :woohoo: Hi, I am very new at this and I have problem due to my success in grownig trees from seed. I have about 6 pear trees and 7 sugar maples approx 5 inches tall. They are in very small pots to grow seeds. I live in Quebec Canada and winter is kind of hard here. Temperature drops below -20 C. How du I protect my little seedlings for the winter. Should I change their pots before winter? Thank you for your help.

What i did, was, stack a bunch of cinder blocks, against the south side of the house (smaller snow drifts there). Then mulched up a bunch of leaves, with the mower, and packed the trees in it. The little skinniest ones, sort of didn't make it.
Which, tree made it through, winter, is a common topic in the spring. Guess i did good, but, it was a mild winter,here.

It's good that you're planning for winter now, You can find all the odd things people do, then decide, what you would do.

The roots, are what we need to worry about.

I agree that a cold frame is perfect for over-wintering plants. That's what I do with all of my plants, not just bonsai.
Just remember that plants are supposed to be able to withstand all seasons, they've evolved to be that way for a billion years (so you could say that they're pretty good at it). That being said, some of the smaller ones may not survive purely because they're too weak.

This guide by Kaizen 每日吃瓜 may be useful;

Good luck reading all that,
Ed

Thank you so much to all who have taken the time to answer me with very good suggestions. I will surely use those ideas for my little seedlings. A special thanks to 每日吃瓜Learner for the reference to Kaizen 每日吃瓜. I truly love what Graham Potter does and put the reference in my favorites.
