So... if you have no idea what you're doing, for that there are forums like this one, where you can ask questions before doing something irreversible.
It's growing though, which is good. Now let it grow, don't prune. You need to grow a trunk first.

I figured with it being a cutting that only cost me $5 I could afford to screw it up. I can always go run and grab another.
I don't plan on doing anything to it for quite a while at this point, for what it's worth.

To start off witrh.. Congratulations with your daughter.
I would indeed not have cut it, I think. That being said.. You could not take advantage, and when you do replant ni spring, trim even further, to the furst set of branches. These will have grown to some 10-cm by then. You can slant the main trun a bit, and wire the new growth in a curve up. That will create a trunk with some interesting movement low on the trunk. THen let it just grow. I am pretty sure that is all you will have time for anyway

Sorry, but I think that is a bad attitude. I could remark that "Hey, don't worry about caring for your daughter. It did not cost you anything, so you can always create another one". Catch my drift? Not something you like to hear right? For me, all plants are also living beings. So they also deserve a little bit of respect, even if they were only 5 bucks.htxbonsai wrote: I figured with it being a cutting that only cost me $5 I could afford to screw it up. Don't get me wrong, I just know that I am a beginner and I realized after doing the trunk chop that I probably shouldn't have...
I was more saying that if I had ended up destroying the tree in my haste that I would have to start over and grow it correctly.
