Looks a bit like a Ficus. Not a particulary good plant, and about as rare as rin in the Amazon in the rainy season. You do not say what country you are in so there is no way of advising where it should be kept. The gravel on top is not a good idea, makes it much more difficult to know when it is dry.

You sure it's not a boxwood? Friendly-Chinese-lady-at-the-road-side-stall style?

m5eaygeoff, Thank you for taking the time to respond.... Sorry, I forgot to mention that I live on the east coast of NC in the USA. Thank you for the advice about the gravel. The lady put extra on top as I was leaving with it, and I thought it was odd, but didn't say anything.

Auk, I am not really sure what it is.... This is my first time having a bonsai, and although I worked in a nursery for 5 years as a teenager, it's not really helping me identify this little treasure. Rare or not, I don't want it to die, so I need to make sure I learn as much as I can. Oh, and yes, it was an Asian lady at a small town fair that sold it to me. I bought it, and then some guy walks up to me, sees it, and starts fussing at her for selling me the one she promised to hold for him to buy. He said he was only gone for a moment. I didn't want to argue, but I had already given her my money. I thought about selling it to him for what I paid, and picking out a different one, but this one was really pretty and at a price I could afford.

Posted 8 years 7 months ago #27554It is very, very common. As you noticed, I could guess where you got it, so no, it is not rare at all. Your story is the same as the one we get from many others visiting this forum - that friendly Chinese guy/woman who sells you a really special bonsai - while what you're buying is not rare at all; it's a mass product and as a bonsai, it doesn't have much value.KatNextDoor wrote: Rare or not
Of course you don't. It's still a nice plant.I don't want it to die

I like the trunk on that last one. But I would go for a MUCH smaller tree. Think 1/2 of the height and 1/4 width..
