I have just become interested in bonsai and was wondering which bonsai would be best. the outside temperature during winter rarely hits -10 and inside my room i have a large window facing North and a glass door facing west. any suggestions for indoor or outdoor would be much appreciated.

Don't try to keep bonsai indoors. It will pretty much always lead to disappointments.

Good trees to start with are junipers and maples (trident, field)
