I live in western New York and winter are pretty harsh here. I have a Chinese Elm I placed inside but my sliding glass door (southern facing). Will it still get enough sun with the porch roof? I posted a picture below. I'm new to the study of bonsai and seem to be failing so far. I have a couple other small trees that a don't know alot about a ponytail palm, a couple money trees, and a mugo pine (that's heat tape in the bottom of the box. Any input would help. I really wanna learn everything I can. Thank you

Tough one. All plants are meant to be outside, but the elm & pine require they be outside for their own health. They don't tolerate being indoors. During the winter, they go dormant, and have special processes that allow them to survive extreme cold temps. But, in this case, the trees haven't gone dormant, because they were kept indoors. It may be difficult to put them into dormancy now we're in the middle of winter.
I think you have two options here.
1) Keep doing what you're doing. They trees aren't doing well now, and probably won't have a super spring either, but they may do just fine.
2) Acclimate the elm & pine outside. They should do fine. The weather is pretty mild right now, so acclimate them outdoors. If you're really worried, bring them in for super cold snaps. Forget the heat tape and don't worry about whether it gets sun or not. Trees get buried under snow & don't see light for months. I keep mine in the shade outside all winter.
Good luck

Thank you. I've had the Elm outside in the box with the pine up until two days ago. So I should just put it back outside?
