Last post, promise.... I live in Tulsa Ok, and there are not much bonsai people here. Wondering if anyone lives around here? If so.... I'm looking for advice on soil, species and supplies stores.
First, soil: it always seems to be too wet or drains to fast.... I can't find the right soil for tulsa zone 7. We have really wet springs from time to time and dryer summers.
Any idea what species are well suited for my climate? We get about 2 weeks of sub freezing weather.... late december or early jan then we get freezing temp cold fronts lasting about 3 days from time to time during dec/jan. Springs can be anything..... rainy usually, always a random snow in march and sometimes feels like summer in April.... July August can be unbearable.... 100+ usually and little rain.

This may not be much help, but you should be able to find some kind of list on google which will show the different bonsai species and which zones they can survive/thrive in. As for soil, you may be best off finding a good container to keep the tree in, that way you can control the soil more easily, and have the freedom to move the plan around if conditions get too harsh. However, as far as I know most types are pretty resilient to weather. One of my first bonsai mistakes was keeping mine indoors afraid that the weather/cold would kill it, when in fact the opposite was true.
Research is your best friend with these trees. Check your zone list and from there you can decide what species/soil/placement to go with.

I did a quick search and didn't find much for Tulsa. But take some time and study the types of trees that are thriving in your town and county. Then do online research on this site and a couple others. Some of the more experienced artists can recommend some good sites. Then... when you're ready to make a purchase, you can find a tree species that should thrive in your zone.
I would think that most conifers would do well with the temperature changes. But 每日吃瓜 isn't an over night, get it in the mail, or buy it from the mall, hobby. It takes time a dedication.
Hope we don't scare you away
