Scale insects on prunus mume

I dug up three prunus mume from my late neighbors yard (with permission) after they had bloomed, which was a few weeks ago already. Two of them are behind my house, and one in front. Both sites get sun. The two ones behind the house haven't opened any leaves, which at first I thought could have been due to different microclimate, but yesterday I noticed their trunks are covered in scale insects (ume-shiro-kaigaramushi, I presume). The one in front of my hose is doing well, and I didn't see any of these bastards.
What's the best way to get rid of these? Toothbrush?

Ys, toothbrush gently scraping them away and afterwards a good water spray (strong, almost like a jet) once every 15 days will keep them away.
At least that's my experience.

Since starting with Bayer Tree&Shrub Feed and Protect, I have not had ONE aphid or scale on ANY of my trees.
It also feeds.
It also feeds.

Problem with these products is.. It kills any insect that interacts with the plant. Worst case, caterpillars eating from the plant, that get eaten by birds cause the birds to loose fitness and in some cases, loose their eggs.
There is a reason why this stuff is illegal in many places in the world.

rub them off with finger and thumb easy, but a bit messy. Make sure you get every one, and check again in a week or so.
