Hi,
I'd like some help in figuring out what's wrong with my bonsai. I got it 1.5 year ago, it was very small. In a little over a year it grew so much, got a lot of new branches and leaves and always looked happy and healthy. The 1st picture was taken a month ago, before I trimmed it for the first time ever. The 2nd and 3rd pics are of how it looks like now, 1 month later. It dried, the green faded, the tips turned yellow, the leaves fall off to the touch. I checked the inside of the trunk (4th pic) and it seems ok? I don't think the problem is the watering. I water all my plants according to their needs and weather, and the bonsai seemed happy with how it's been watered all this time.
I was clueless about what's causing it until earlier today, when my boyfriend finally gave up on trying to save his 5 year old bonsai, which also dried out and looked dead for a while, and we also don't know why. He unrooted it and we found these white stuff around the roots (5th pic). Is this fungus? Both trees were in the balcony, about 20 cm apart from each other, and now I suspect my bonsai got the fungus from his. I haven't checked the roots on mine, I read it's not a good idea to mess with them during the growing season. I'm not sure what to do, and how to proceed in case this is actually fungus and got to my bonsai too. Please help!

the white stuff are rocks.
Most likely something went wrong with watering.
