A few days ago I did some hard pruning on my Sharp’s Pygmy Japanese maple and noticed some blackening of the young bark around the cuts. I decided not to use cut paste since I read that maples compartmentalize wounds well. The sapwood doesn’t appear to be affected and I don’t see spots anywhere else on the tree. Anyone know what it is?

Verticillium wilt is non reversable. Less hope that is not the case here.

But to be extra careful, sanitize all tools used on the tree before using them on other trees. If repotting, do it away from other trees, dispose the soil and? sanitize the area (and tools) before worki on another tree at the same place.

Thanks for the help! I'll post an update after the leaf buds open, probably in the next week or so. By then I should have a better idea of what's going on.

Update:
The tree is growing and the new leaves look healthy but now there’s clearly some kind of infection on the trunk. It’s a small area so I’m wondering if I should try cutting it out??
