Hello! This is my first post here, and I'm new to bonsai, so sorry if I get some things wrong, and I'm open to criticism and input!

I bought this rose bush from Home Depot around May time last year. I figured it may be a good introduction into bonsai trees and shrubs and such.

I started by trimming down its roots and doing some heavy pruning. I thought it looked real cool, and it even flowered within a week of me having it. Sadly, I didn't tend to it, and without watering, it died after a while.?

Around March this year, I felt a move to get back into bonsai and really commit, so I went out to check the rose plant, and it was somehow alive. I've tended to it the past month or so, and I'm pretty excited about it. I think it looks real neat.

Sorry to disappoint you, but this plant will not be suitable for bonsai. The plant is not going to be able to be potted into a shallow pot the flowers are too big in relation to the size the plant would need to be and the leaves also. This type of rose is pruned hard each year and new growth comes, so it will not be possible to create any shape for it. The Rose used for a bonsai is the miniature species with tiny flowers. This plant will be better planted in the ground and left.

Thanks for the input! I'm okay if I'm not able to make proper bonsai out of it. Frankly I'm just happy raising it and making it how I like it. There's a bonsai nursery somewhat near me with a real nice owner, so I may pick up a more appropriate species.
