I have one of these "pot belly ficus" only because it was given to me as a gift. Upon closer inspection the branches are from a ficus microcarpa and the roots come from a ficus retusa.

That's one of the reasons why I tell family, relatives, friends to NEVER give me a bonsai as a present

If your family realizes you are serious about bonsai, they should be ashamed giving this plant to you, and take it to become an ordinary houseplant. Do not waste your energy on it.

My family would "gift" it to me so they wouldn't have to throw it out. If i killed it they won't mind.

No. If you look at the picture, you see it has a mug called 'Kaizen 每日吃瓜'.

UPDATE: I have checked the air layer fig, and nothing has grown. There are no roots, nothing. I have now decided to attempt to propagate multiple fig cuttings. Some are on the tree, one is in a pot.
