I got my first maple tree a couple months ago at my local garden center. It is basically a readymade broom style tree, however I don't like this style maple trees as much as the upright trees, I think upright maples look more impressive. Therefore I would like to know if it would be possible to change the shape of my broom maple into a more upright shape.
If it were possible, I would have to reduce the amount of branches coming from the cluster on the trunk. I am however not sure which branches to cut in order to achieve an upright shape, so that's what I need you guy's help for
Any advice for styling this tree is welcome!
Thanks

Yes, you can change style. But I cant help to wonder why you purshased a material that is perfect for broom style if you dont want broom style?
I would definettely train it in broom style. That will take you to a good looking tree faster than any other option.

Agree with Topfrog.
I don't see anything else this tree would do easily, whereas broom style would be easy.
Maybe you should get another tree. If that one doesn't work out, another, and maybe a fourth. Four isn't really that much. Maybe...........

I got to agree with TropFrog and Ivan...
This will be a beautiful broom style maple tree!
And this tree can give you some cuttings later to make new ones.
If you don't want to wait to propagate your own maple trees, you can buy another one more suitable to the style you want to train it...
I used to unlike broom style at the beggining because of it's simplicity, but today, I really enjoy them.
Congrats on that, it's a nice tree you have.

I agree with everyone above. You can develop a bonsai in any style you please. But remember that every tree has their own 'personality', and rarely they grow as you ask them to. Its a bit like raising kids... Or if you get a mature tree, trying to change its personality is like trying to change the personality of a spouse or partner -- it can be done (not easily), but do you really want to?
