Hi guys, end of last year I acquired a tilia cordata for a great price. After looking at it all winter the thickness of some of the branches started to bug me.

I’ve heard it said that the branches often need replacing as they rapidly thicken, and this can be done by cutting back to a stub, forcing new buds to form at the branch junction.

Has anyone done this? I’m thinking about cutting almost all the branches back, except the thinnest ones which I hope to induce back budding on...

Alternatives are: scrap all the branches and cut everything back and rebuild, or work on back budding now and deal with the thick branches later.

Any guidance/anecdotes/experiences more than welcome!

Cheers!
