I recently got my hands on a 2-4 year old Japanese umbrella pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) and I am wondering how best to care for it. I am guessing I should prune it like any other conifer with an elongated growing pattern because it isn't a true pine. Also I know they are slow growers but looking down the line what shapes should I start thinking about? I haven't found many examples of umbrella pine (kōyamaki) bonsai online and I'm curious what would work best. Thanks!

Not the best species for bonsai as the thick and long needles do not reduce much in size.
As with most conifers the informal upright, cascading and literati is suitable forms.
Aim for a huge tree so it gets into proportion with the needles.?

Not a common species for bonsai, but if you pulled this of, it should be a one off piece
