Hi I have? been given a Ficus in a plastic pot 125 mm high and 170 mm round.
Its an established tree but looks like its in an organic compost.?
Reading the care guide for a Ficus it recommends using normal bonsia soil.
I am very new to bonsia so unsure what normal soil mix is.
My question is what is normal bonsia soil, is it a mix of? inorganic medium or can I buy mixed soil in the UK.
Thanks in advance

For my ficus, I use a mix of a bit of organic soil mixed with akadama, about 20:80.
I use the organic matter to retain more soil, which makes my life keeping indoor bonsai alive a bit easier

Thank you Oscar much appreciated?
Its early spring and the Ficus is putting on new leaves.
Is it ok to repot now and reduce down to a slightly smaller pot.
Thanks

For ficus my experience is that repotting later, when the tree has been outdoor as month or so and growth has really starting off is the best time to repot.

Hi and thank you for your advice.
Being so new to Bonsia I will take all the advice given.
As I Live in the UK it may be another 2 to 3 months before its warm enough to put the Ficus in my garden.?
is that to late in the season or not.
You advice is very much appreciated.

I live in Sweden and move ficus outdoors later than most people in UK.
I move them outdoors mid May, that is just 6 weeks away. If you do not live in the scotish higlands, I am sure you are 2-3 weeks away, not 2-3 months.

The usual guideline is 50F/10C. For the next five days we are 10 degrees over that at night, then three nights four degrees below and 10-15 above during the day, probably with lots of sun. Then nights at least five degrees above. Do you have similar variations? Would you take them out now and expect them to make it through those three nights okay??
The indoor trees are ficus, jaboticaba, baobab, and Meyer lime. All are in pretty large pots and I don't want to carry them back and forth, but that means a pretty decent heat sink to protect the roots.
One year we had a cold snap in the third week in April, lows 20-22F/-6C to -7C. For that I brought them indoors. I would like to get them in the sun, wind, and rain. And, clean up the window seat where they drop leaves all winter. And, put the bird cage back where it belongs.

I would not bring a ficus or lime back indoors if it is just a few nights at 7 degrees.
The desert trees are different. in my area it rains too much to even concider keeping those species outdoors. I am sure they are ok with 7 degrees if they are bone dry.

is it ok to repot before before putting outside.

Why do you want to repot when it is ok and not when it is the best time?
If it is your first repotting, I recomend to reach out to your local bonsai club for help and guidance. Many clubs offer workshops for beginners.
