The reason I want to repot my Ficus is it is in what seems like a general compost and I am unsure when it was last repotted.
its also in a standard orange plastic coloured pot and I have a more suitable pot for it about the same size as current one

None of the reasons you mention is valid for repotting a tree in the first year after purshase.

You need to learn how to grow the tree healthy in your conditions before working on it. That takes at least a full growing season.

Being a very new person to Bonsia. I joined the forum to gain knowledge on the care of Bonsia trees.
I have received so much varity of advice from this forum and by reading different care guides from bonsia suppliers its confusing..
Thank you for giving me your insight on the care of my Ficus?
I can't get my head round why you dont repot a tree that you have no history on.
It maybe pot bound or sitting in compost thats completely unsuitable for it.

The "have no history on" is one of the most important reasons not to repot it. You do not know if it has been growing in your climate, in a greenhouse or in southeast asia. You do not know how long it has been in transit nor how long it was inside the ikea store before it was bought.

You can easily see if it is pot bound by taking it out of the pot and look at it. You can also easily see how well it is draining every time you water.

I often see beginners worrying that trees are in compost that is unsuitable or even bad for the trees. But it makes no sense. Theese trees are produced by milions every year. There are just no business whatsoever in producing trees in unsuitable compost. Those that try are quickly out of business. Producers that optimize substrate for fast growth and cost will thrive, just like their trees.
