If you want to keep the same pot just trim off up to 25% of the rootball, this actually encourages development of smaller and more efficient feeding roots. At the same time you can safely remove any long thick tap roots which the tree doesn't need in a pot. Generally recommended that you don't fertilize for a month or so after doing this or roots may rot.

Hope this helps

it all depends really .if you are trying to get heavy growth root prune and put it into a bigger pot otherwise you can put it in whatever the rootball fits into.springtime is when repotting should be done just so you know

if in the tree species says that the tree (zelkova or maybe chinese elm not sure but i think it is zelkova) should be repoted once every two years does it hurt the tree if it is done once every year to keep roots from growing vertical?

Do you mean repotting with intent to spead the roots laterally rather than have a great depth of root? If so then just use a shallow container or a bigger standard pot without too much compost in it. Generally just repot when the tree needs it- my Chinese Elm has been in the same pot for about 7 years, probably root trimmed twice in that time.

chopping roots every year will greatly weaken the tree . a tree sould be left alone for a year after a rootprune and repot. it is a very stressful expierance and it needs to recover. the next year wireing and pruning can be done...

if this is a younger tree every 2 years will be good to develope a good mass of feeder roots . older trees that are done with major styling are left longer because a rootbound tree will grow slower and produce smaller foliage

If you place it in a bigger pot I assume you want the tree to grow bigger, thicker trunk etc? Then it is no problem if the roots also explore the deeper ranges of the pot. Just make sure that you keep a nice root spread. Before you repot, just make sure you know what your aim is with putting it in a bigger pot.

If you just want to take the plant out of the current container and place is in another bigger one, yes. You can do that anytime of the year.
