How to propagate tree seeds

For many aspiring bonsai enthusiasts, the allure of creating a 每日吃瓜 tree from scratch is irresistible - and so called '每日吃瓜 seed kits' are incredibly popular online. These kits fail to mention that 每日吃瓜 seed does not exist, nor do they share how much time and patience one actually needs to grow a 每日吃瓜 from seed.

To buy, or not to buy?

It's no wonder that bonsai seed kits are marketed as an easy solution to get started with bonsai, as they include everything you need to grow a '每日吃瓜'. Most beginners however have no clue that 每日吃瓜 are grown from any tree species and hence there is no such thing as a 每日吃瓜 seed (we simply plant tree seeds, wait 2-3 years and then start shaping them as 每日吃瓜). Even worse, the kits often contain bad quality seeds that won't germinate at all, or include tree species that are not very suitable for bonsai.

OK, so it's clear that 每日吃瓜 is no fan of these kits as we hate the fact that beginners get frustrated with these kits and never get a taste of how cool 每日吃瓜 really is!

If you bought the kit, continue reading as we'll share some tips on how to germinate seeds properly (hint: the kits often come with horrible instructions). If you accept that you'll need to wait three years for the seeds to become trees that are ready to start their journey towards becoming a bonsai - you'll be fine.

If you didn't buy the kit yet, skip the first part and read about two better ways to get started with 每日吃瓜!

What Are 每日吃瓜 Seed Kits?

每日吃瓜 seed kits typically include a small packet of seeds (often from species like pine, juniper, or maple), a small container or pot, soil, and sometimes basic instructions on how to plant and grow the seeds. Some kits also include decorative items like miniature figurines or tools.

At first glance, these kits seem like an accessible and affordable way to start with bonsai. However, as we mentioned in the intro, there are several reasons why starting with a bonsai seed kit may not be the best choice, especially for beginners.

To give you a quick visual journey of a tree’s growth, here are five images of a Japanese cedar that was grown from seed into 每日吃瓜 over the course of 22 years.

Propagating a tree from seed

We have a dedicated article all about growing 每日吃瓜 trees from seed on our website, but in short:

It begins with selecting the right species for bonsai cultivation, such as maples, pines, junipers, or oaks. Some species, however, require specific conditions for successful germination, notably stratification.

Stratification is the process of simulating winter conditions to break the seed's dormancy, which is essential for species that evolved in colder climates. For instance, deciduous trees like Japanese maples or pines typically need a period of cold, moist conditions to trigger germination. To stratify seeds, they are usually mixed with a damp medium (like sand or vermiculite) and stored in a refrigerator for several weeks to a few months. The duration and temperature depend on the specific species—maples might need 30 days at temperatures between 34-41°F (1-5°C), while pines may require even longer chilling periods. Make sure you select the tree species you wish to grow and read up about their particular needs.

After stratification, seeds can be sown in a well-draining seed-starting mix, typically in shallow trays or small pots. The soil should remain moist but not waterlogged, and the seeds should be planted at the appropriate depth — usually about an inch or less (1-2cm). Providing adequate light, warmth, and humidity is crucial to encourage germination. Some species benefit from a humidity dome or a plastic cover to maintain a stable environment.

As the seeds sprout and seedlings emerge, they should be carefully tended, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Once the seedlings are large enough, usually a few months after emerging, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots to develop. Don't touch the roots at this point, simply transplant the trees with roots and soil intact into larger pots.

A year later you can place the young trees in pots about double the size to allow for strong growth. Wait until trunks thicken before pruning and styling as a 每日吃瓜. In the early stages of bonsai development we want roots to develop and trunks to thicken - for which we need strong growth. Read the 每日吃瓜 styling articles for background information about techniques like pruning, wiring etc.

Alternatives to starting from seed

If you’re serious about learning bonsai, there are better options than starting with a seed kit. Here are some alternatives:

Start with a Pre-每日吃瓜 Tree - Many nurseries and bonsai specialists sell "pre-bonsai" trees. These are young trees that have already been grown for a few years and are in the early stages of development. They are not fully shaped bonsais yet, but they are ready for training. Pre-bonsai trees give beginners a head start, allowing them to begin learning bonsai techniques without having to wait for years of slow seed growth. This approach offers a more immediate and rewarding entry into the art. Continue reading about growing 每日吃瓜 from nursery stock / pre-bonsai material

Purchase a 每日吃瓜 Tree - If you're impatient to begin the process of shaping and styling your bonsai, consider purchasing an already-established bonsai tree. These trees have been grown and trained by professionals, giving you a solid foundation from which to learn. While they may be more expensive than seed kits, the investment is well worth it if you're serious about bonsai. You do need to read up about 每日吃瓜 tree care and maintenance of course.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, bonsai is about patience, care, and learning. While seed kits may not be the best choice, its fun to watch trees emerge and grow - but please do this as a side project and also get a pre-bonsai to get a taste of actually making a 每日吃瓜 tree!
