actually, that might work, during the winter, we pack mulched up leaves in cinder blocks, and bury our pots in it. Of course, planting them in the garden is easy, and as long as the fox keeps the rabbits away, it seems to work.

Unfortunately I do not have a cell phone at the moment so i can't provide pictures. What should I look for when it comes to root trimming/training in the future? How do I know what to cut?
Root trimming is done for 2 main resons:
- The reduce the amount of inactive root in the pot (So to keep the growing ends near the trunk, and finely ramified)
- To balance the rootbase (Nebari)
As to how and which roots:
- When reducing the roots, you alway try to trim back to a side-root
- When trimming the roots, you always try to reduce the roots to a point where they can go into the pot without circling (Although for trees in development this may be dificult at first, keeping in mind the previous point)
When trimmming roots, always trim the strongest root more than weaker roots
However, as long as you want your tree to gain girth, you should be modest in root trimming.
